Buddhist realm of Tawang

The Himalayan region of Tawang is a sacred Buddhist realm as it is the land of 108 holy lakes and was once a part of Tibet since the middle ages. The mountains are dotted with numerous Buddhist shrines and monasteries of great religious and historical importance. Most of them date to the 17th century during the golden era of Tibetan empire. Tawang monastery, the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second largest in the world, was chosen as a holy site by Lama Lodre Gyatso who preached Tibetan Buddhism to the native Monpas and saw a divine vision of a horse ‘Ta’ and ‘Wang’ resting place. He also prophesised the incarnation of the Dalai Lama VI, who was later born in Urgyeling near Tawang in 1683. Zemithang Stupa, Brahmadung Ani Gompa, Khinmey monastery, Gaden Rabgyel Ling, Chilipam monastery and Thubten Dhargeling are among many notable shrines which can be visited on this spiritual journey.
